Lily Hargraves Nungarrayi

This work is of a place at Duck Ponds or Kurlungalinpa area.

The long shapes are wood of live trees and the oval sometimes curved shapes are laju (witchetty grubs) which are in the lower wood of these trees. Tucked in unobvious places are women hunting down these tasty insects.  These women are represented by a “U” shape and are really, in this work in ceremony.

The dots represent the grasses and bushes present in the landscape and the clear areas again country side which could be covered in water during the wet season.

Duck Ponds is a sacred site situated 100kms south east of Lajamanu. The area becomes rich in water and bird life with the onset of rain.

Nyilyari Tjapangati

This paint depicts designs associated with the lake site of Wilkinkarra (Lake Mackay). In mythological times a large group of Tingari Men visited this site on their travels east. The men had previously visited the rockhole site of Mt. Webb further south. The lines in the painting represent the path of the Tingari men as they travelled towards Lake Mackay, while the roundels depict the rockholes the men visited on their travels.
